5 FACTORS THAT DETERMINE A DIAMOND’S VALUE

The value of a diamond is determined by five main factors, known as the 4Cs + Certificate. Each of them plays a key role in the quality, brilliance, and price of a diamond piece of jewelry.

  • -The larger the diamond, the rarer and more valuable it is.

  • -The whiter the color, the higher its value.

  • -The higher the clarity, the more valuable the diamond.

  • -The cut gives the diamond its characteristic brilliance.

  • -The certificate guarantees authenticity and quality.

1. CARAT

Carat is the unit of measurement that indicates a diamond’s weight.
One carat equals 0.2 grams (200 mg) and is an international standard.
Each carat is divided into 100 points.

For example:
0.50 ct = 50 points = half a carat

As carat weight increases, diamonds become rarer, which significantly increases their value.

2. COLOR

Diamonds are graded on a 20-step color scale, ranging from D to Z, ordered from colorless to increasingly noticeable color.
Color grading is performed by specialists under controlled lighting conditions and by comparison with standard color references.

The more colorless the diamond, the higher its value.

3. CLARITY

Every diamond is unique. The conditions under which diamonds are formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface leave natural traces—known as inclusions and internal characteristics—often referred to as the “fingerprints of nature.”

The number, size, color, and position of these inclusions determine the diamond’s clarity.
The fewer the inclusions, the greater the transparency, brilliance, and value of the stone.

4. CUT

The cut is the only characteristic of a diamond shaped by human hands.
It determines the stone’s symmetry, proportions, and the way light travels through it.

A well-cut diamond reflects light optimally and reveals its distinctive fiery brilliance.
The cut is the key to a diamond’s true beauty.

5. CERTIFICATE

The certificate verifies the authenticity and technical characteristics of a diamond and is a crucial factor when choosing diamond jewelry. Therefore, all diamond pieces should be accompanied by an official certificate.

Altınbaş jewelry is crafted using diamonds sourced from sightholder suppliers and certified in accordance with the Kimberley Process, ensuring their ethical origin and quality.
Altınbaş works with leading international gemological institutions such as GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and HRD Antwerp.

A diamond certificate is a guarantee of quality and value and should be carefully preserved.
